Getting Started With World Religions
The Getting Started With World Religions pack has been designed for use in primary schools and particularly
for staff with little or no knowledge and understanding of the six principle world religions, namely Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism
and Sikhism.
The information presented provides a general introduction to the principal religions and further details about particular aspects of those religions.
It also includes practical suggestions for approaching aspects of the major religions and information on how such activities can be used to fulfil
some of the requirements of the Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education.
The information is not directly referenced to particular units of work.
Teachers should use the material to plan appropriate lessons from the schemes of work.
The practices of members of the religions presented are often varied.
What is offered here is necessarily generalised and brief to allow teachers easy access to what may be unfamiliar materials.
It is important to recognise that the materials do not present a comprehensive 'scheme' for each religion, further materials will be necessary.
The pack is a starting point.
Each section contains:
- information on the key beliefs of each religion;
- information on some of the key aspects of the religion suitable for study in primary schools;
- 'Ideas for RE' sheets outlining possible activities for pupils;
- a selected glossary using the preferred spellings of each faith group;
- and a basic list of artefacts for each religion.
(Getting Started With World Religions pack is based on an original design by Dr J. A. Bennett - 1994)
